Basically, when we refer to the “types of kitchen” it typically depends upon our intent.
Like exactly “What type of kitchen you are looking into?”
We can differentiate various types of modular kitchens according to, materials used, design, finishes, and color combination.
- The Kitchen layout or shape
- Material used
- Design
- Finishes
- Color combination.
So let’s discuss each one differently.
Types of Kitchen-As Per The Kitchen Layout or Shape
Determining the shape or the kitchen layout is the first thing to do when planning a kitchen. The kitchen layout depends upon several factors such as the size of the space, the no of kitchen appliances, storage units, etc. Also, you should consider your convenience of usage.
If you have a small room then you should go with the layout that suits best a small modular kitchen like most preferred I-shaped or L-shaped kitchen which is easy to make and budget-friendly.
If you really have a big space and budget on your side then you can go with various types of kitchen layouts like U-shaped, Galley, Island, parallel, Peninsula, G-shaped, L-shaped, or double L-shaped designs.
Look, for me selecting a kitchen layout is more of a personal preference than look or design. After all, this useful piece of furniture makes things convenient for you.
You can also get a detailed 3D design where all the things from drawers, other storage units, and kitchen appliances along with the layout are clearly defined.
Types of Kitchen-As Per The Material Used
Types of kitchens can also be determined by the core material used to make them or the materials used for making the kitchen cabinets. From metal to wood there are various types of materials are being used for kitchen making.
from natural wood, plywood, HDF, and MDF, to steel, aluminum to glass, you have a wide range of options to pick from.
Like,
Wooden modular kitchens are trending and if you have a good budget then you can go with natural wood like Teak, Sesum, Oak, maple, and birch. Plywood is the most popular option now and requires a medium budget. If you have a very low budget then you can go with HDF and MDF which I personally do not recommend. Also, WPC or PVC modular kitchens are also made due to their high resistance to water and termites.
Steel modular kitchens have their own benefits and are preferred by many. Steel kitchens are hygienic and last long but are a little expensive.
Aluminum modular kitchens are another option and are practical. These types of kitchens have a modern appearance, are durable, and are easy to maintain. Also, back-painted glass or lacquered glass with aluminum profile kitchens are increasingly popular due to their modern and stunning finish.
Types of Kitchen-As Per The Design
There are various types of design themes or patterns you can choose from. Basically “How do you want your kitchen to look like?”.
From traditional kitchen to modern kitchen designs there are a variety of kitchen designs you can choose from. Each design has its unique style and feature that you should know and decide which one suits you best according to your lifestyle, preferences, and budget.
A traditional kitchen provides you with a classic look whereas a modern kitchen design is a simple and minimalist design. There is another design called transitional design which is a mix of modern and traditional design. If you want a blend of traditional design with a modern feel then you can prefer this design.
There are some other couples of designs that are also popular like the industrial kitchen which provides a bold and raw look, the rustic kitchen design which has a cozy and inviting feel and the farmhouse kitchen design which has a vintage appearance.
You must go with a kitchen design that is practical for you and has better functionality. It’s wise a pick a design before planning a kitchen. It helps you to align the kitchen with your home style.
Types of Kitchen-As Per The Finishing
How is your kitchen going to look mostly depends upon the finishes. Modular kitchens and other furniture are a part of interior designing and hence very much depends upon the appearance.
There are a variety of finishes available for modular kitchens and most people often get confused while deciding. The factor you should consider before selecting a finish based on the design, durability of the finish, its look, its advantages and disadvantages, and your budget.
If you are considering a natural wood kitchen or a stainless steel kitchen then you need not worry about the finishing.
But most of the kitchens are done either by plywood or some other compressed wood material like HDF or MDF which requires a finishing material.
There are plenty of finishing materials available like Laminate, Acrylic, Laminate, veneer, and paints. They all have their advantages and disadvantages and are available at various price points.
Whether you decide on a Laminate finished kitchen or an Acrylic kitchen or go with some other finishing option is totally depends upon the style, and appearance you looking for, and the budget you have. You can also go with various finishes simultaneously and create a mix-and-match pattern design for your kitchen.

There are plenty of colour options available for the kitchen with Sunmica(laminate) and paint. Also, there is a wide range of colours available with Acrylic too.
The most common colour used in the kitchen is white. Yellow, orange, blue, grey, and red with a combination of white are also popular for the kitchen. Wooden colour kitchens are gradually gaining popularity.
Apart from these, there are several modern kitchen colour combinations that are trending. You should experiment and choose from various color patterns for your kitchen.
